Ecological Monitoring

Ecological Monitoring

We provide comprehensive ecological monitoring services for public and private sector companies covering a wide array of expertise. We have extensive experience with complex and evolving governmental regulations, policies and guidelines.

Ecological monitoring activities are required for many different types of project, from planning applications to research and conservation management. The type of project and the specific site conditions will ultimately determine the type of surveys that are required, the methods used and the time involved. Most ecological surveys need to be conducted at specific times of the year, reflecting the seasonal variation in the activity of target species or the composition of target habitats.

We also design and implement ecological monitoring programmes, from large-scale monitoring for nature reserves to monitoring the success of species mitigation associated with development. We can undertake detailed analysis of ecological data and are skilled in statistical techniques and data presentation.

Whatever your project, we can provide the expertise you require. Our ecologists are experienced in all aspects ofecological surveying and monitoring methods in order to ensure compliance with planning requirements, meetresearch needs, and inform impact assessments and conservation management.

We offer a comprehensive survey and monitoring service, which includes all plant and animal groups. All surveys are undertaken in accordance with standard ecological survey techniques and methodologies. We conduct biological, aquatic, fish, avian, migratory bird, plant, tree, wetland, and waterbody surveys; and soil, habitat, and natural resource damage assessments.
We have conducted numerous projects to survey or monitor threatened species of avifauna, bats, invertebrates, and freshwater fish. Many of our projects include bat surveys and monitoring at wind farm sites, before and after wind farm operation, using ultrasound bat detecting techniques and cave survey for roosts.
We offer an innovative radar ornithology service, which includes all bird groups, including seabirds, raptors and storks. All radar surveys are undertaken using state of the art radar technology and methodologies. We have bird experts working with radar data on diurnal and nocturnal flight behaviour of individual birds. Radar studies are of major interest for environmental impact assessments dealing with collision risk estimates of birds and bats with man made structures such as wind farms, airports and power lines.
Wind turbines may kill birds and bats by collision to tower and blades. Fatality rates vary widely regionally across wind resource areas.
We offer bird and bat fatality estimates and relevant mortality mitigation studies for wind farms. Our services include carcass searches using trained dogs and standard searching methodologies. Parameters such as carcass persistence, search efficiency and fatality estimation are modelled to estimate wildlife fatalities at wind-power facilities. These estimates are fundamental to understanding acute and cumulative effects of wind power on wildlife populations.
We offer a full suite of ecological monitoring services for pre-construction phase of wind energy development. These services include baseline ecological surveys and monitoring using standard methodologies and best practice.
We offer an integrated service of ecological monitoring for post-construction phase of wind energy development. These services include Post-construction Fatality Studies and Estimators of Wildlife Fatality and long term monitoring of bird and bat activity.
For long term studies we include in our offer the use of Radar technology which is the most cost-effective solution to quantify bird movements during day and night time over large areas and for long time periods of time.
