We conducted an environmental monitoring programme for the A4 Motorway Northeastern Portugal). The A 4 is a Portuguese motorway which runs from Matosinhos to Amarante, with a length of 63 km, where it narrows to become signed as the IP road of which, by now, forms a part, IP4 .
During 2013 ecological and surface water quality parameters of the motorway were surveyed as part of the post-construction environmental monitoring programme.
Water Quality parameters such as zinc and copper concentrations were sampled on a regular basis while species mortality, such as bird deaths, and habitat fragmentation were continually monitored. We assessed the number of road-kills as well as the animal crossing frequency through culverts and underpasses.
